Bandipora, April 18: Authorities rescued around 50 stranded vehicles during a major operation on the Bandipora–Gurez road in north Kashmir, which remains closed following heavy snowfall, officials said on Saturday.

The 85-kilometre-long Bandipora–Gurez road continues to remain shut today after fresh snowfall at several locations, including Razdan Top.

An official said the rescue operation was carried out jointly by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) and Bandipora Police after multiple vehicles were trapped near Razdan Pass due to fresh accumulation of snow. Acting swiftly, teams launched snow clearance operations and successfully evacuated the stranded vehicles.

The road stretch at Razdan Top was made temporarily motorable, allowing the rescued vehicles—carrying tourists, passengers, and essential goods—to move safely towards their destinations.

Passengers expressed gratitude to the BRO and Bandipora Police for their prompt response and dedicated efforts in ensuring their safety under challenging weather conditions.

A truly commendable effort was also put forth by SHO Gurez, Mr. Nazir Ahmad, who once again demonstrated exceptional dedication and courage. Along with his team, he actively participated in the rescue operation at the challenging Razdan Pass, ensuring the safety of stranded passengers despite harsh weather conditions. His leadership from the front and readiness to respond at any hour reflect the true spirit of public service.

Locals have widely hailed the efforts of SHO Gurez Nazir Ahmad and the Bandipora Police, describing their timely intervention as a ray of hope in difficult circumstances. His commitment, bravery, and swift response have earned immense appreciation from the public.

Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Gurez, Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad, stated that in view of the forecast for further snowfall and rainfall, and keeping passenger safety in mind, vehicular movement on the Bandipora–Gurez road shall remain suspended for today.

Officials have advised commuters to avoid travel on the route until weather conditions improve and the road is declared safe for traffic.
