Pampore, August 25: The Wildlife Protection Department, Range Khrew, has issued a safety advisory following increased movement of Asiatic black bears near forest fringes, orchards, agricultural fields and residential areas.
The department has urged people to avoid venturing alone near forest areas, particularly during morning, evening and night hours, and not to leave garbage, fruit waste or food items in the open.
Residents have also been advised to keep children away from forest edges and isolated areas.
The department cautioned people against approaching, provoking, surrounding or attempting to photograph or record bears. In case of an encounter, people have been advised to remain calm, avoid running, maintain a safe distance and give the animal a clear route to escape.
The department also warned people against approaching bear cubs, saying the mother bear may become aggressive while protecting its young.
The Wildlife Department has appealed to residents to immediately report any sighting or movement of wild animals to the concerned authorities and avoid spreading rumours or unverified information.
