NEW DELHI, AUGUST 10: The Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya National Academy of Social Security (PDUNASS) on Monday inaugurated a specialised joint training programme by the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) and the International Training Centre of the International Labour Organization (ITC-ILO) on strengthening actuarial governance in social security.
Titled “Actuarial Practices in Social Security: Strengthening Actuarial Governance at EPFO India,” the three-day residential programme is being held in New Delhi from August 10 to 12. It follows an online learning module conducted through the ITC-ILO e-Campus from May 25 to August 9.
The programme aims to strengthen in-house actuarial expertise within EPFO and enhance evidence-based decision-making for the organisation’s provident fund, pension and insurance schemes.
Director, PDUNASS, Kumar Rohit, said the initiative was aligned with the academy’s mandate to provide internationally benchmarked training to EPFO officers. He stressed that strengthening actuarial capacity had become increasingly important with the EPF, EPS and EDLI schemes aligning with the Code on Social Security, 2020.
ILO Deputy Director and Senior Advisor for Regional Partnership and Resource Mobilization Oktavianto Pasaribu highlighted the importance of sound actuarial governance for ensuring the long-term financial sustainability of social security institutions. He said the collaboration reflected the ILO’s commitment to strengthening social protection systems across South Asia.
ITC-ILO Faculty member Charles Crevier outlined the blended learning structure of the programme, covering actuarial valuation methods, Asset-Liability Management and global best practices in governance of social security institutions.
Central Provident Fund Commissioner Ramesh Krishnamurthi formally inaugurated the programme and underscored the strategic importance of actuarial governance for EPFO. He said actuarial decisions taken by the organisation have a direct bearing on the financial security of millions of workers whose retirement savings, pensions and insurance are administered by EPFO.
“As EPFO continues to grow in size and responsibility, strengthening our actuarial capacity becomes increasingly important to strengthen governance and prepare better for future challenges,” Krishnamurthi said.
Senior officials from EPFO and the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) are participating in the residential phase, including Financial Adviser and Chief Accounts Officer, Additional Central Provident Fund Commissioners, Regional Provident Fund Commissioners, Section Officers and Assistant Section Officers.
ITC-ILO faculty member Amjad Rabi, ILO Senior Programme Officer Divya Verma and National Project Coordinator Karun Gopinath are also participating in the programme.
The initiative seeks to strengthen institutional capacity in actuarial assessment, financial planning and risk management while promoting internationally aligned governance practices in India’s social security administration.
