LCMA Demolishes Hotel Plinth in Khimber Green Belt; Locals Allege Partial Action

Srinagar, Oct 11: The Lakes Conservation and Management Authority (LCMA) has demolished the plinth of a proposed hotel at Takia Sangri in the Hazratbal green belt on the outskirts of Srinagar after detecting a deviation from the approved construction parameters.

An LCMA enforcement squad rushed to the spot after receiving information about the construction and demolished a portion of the structure.

However, locals have questioned the extent of the demolition, alleging that the action was limited to a portion of the plinth while construction machinery and other material remained at the site. They described the exercise as incomplete and sought effective follow-up action to ensure that construction does not resume in violation of the applicable regulations.

The locals further alleged that encroachments and unauthorized construction were continuing in the green belt area and questioned the effectiveness of enforcement measures. They called on the concerned authorities to examine the status of the site, ensure compliance with the applicable land-use and construction regulations, and prevent further unauthorized activity.

The allegations raise questions about whether the demolition will be followed by sustained monitoring and action against any remaining violations. While the reported demolition indicates enforcement intervention, the extent of the action and the status of the remaining material at the site require clarification from the authority.

An LCMA official said that illegal structure was demolished and the encroacher was warned of consequences under law in case he resorts to further construction. [KNT]
