Bandipora, April 21: In a first-of-its-kind initiative, the Deputy Commissioner Bandipora, Indu Kanwal Chib, on Tuesday hailed the pioneering efforts of Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Gurez in introducing tulip cultivation in the region.

An official spokesperson of KVK said the initiative has been undertaken under the guidance of Vice Chancellor, SKUAST-K Nazir Ahmad Ganai, with KVK Gurez establishing the first-ever Tulip yard in the area to study the feasibility of tulip bulb production and flowering under local climatic conditions.

During her visit to KVK Gurez, the Deputy Commissioner was briefed by Hilal Ahmad Malik about various innovative interventions being carried out at the centre. These include introduction of location-specific technologies aimed at strengthening agri-based livelihoods in the remote Gurez Valley.

Officials said the initiative has received strong institutional support from SKUAST-K, including contributions from Raihana Habib Kanth and Haroon Rashid Naik, along with technical backing from the Division of Floriculture, Landscaping and Architecture.

Expressing satisfaction, the Deputy Commissioner termed the tulip project a breakthrough in agricultural diversification and appreciated the role of KVK Gurez in reviving heritage crops and promoting modern farming practices among tribal farmers.

She also commended efforts to expand cultivation of high-value crops like Kala Zeera, noting that increased area under cultivation is likely to result in improved production and better economic returns for farmers in the coming seasons.

Highlighting the broader impact, the DC said such initiatives are crucial for bridging developmental gaps in remote regions and improving the quality of life of local communities through innovation and capacity building.

She appreciated the entire KVK Gurez team for their dedicated work in bringing advanced agricultural technologies to the field and empowering farmers across the valley.
