New Delhi, May 14: Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan on Thursday said India “dominated the escalation matrix” during the four-day conflict under Operation Sindoor, attributing the advantage to superior situational awareness and integrated military systems.

Speaking at the ‘Kalam and Kavach’ defence conclave at the Manekshaw Centre here, Gen Chauhan said Indian forces were able to effectively track and counter adversary actions in real time.

“We dominated the escalation matrix on all four days because we had superior situational awareness,” he said, adding that integrated systems enabled monitoring not only within the country but also across borders.

Operation Sindoor was launched on May 7 last year following the Pahalgam terror attack, with Indian forces carrying out precision strikes on terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).

Referring to evolving conflict dynamics, the CDS said future warfare is increasingly moving towards non-contact and non-kinetic domains, even as India must remain prepared for conventional engagements given its disputed land borders.

He also stressed the importance of clearly defined objectives and exit strategies in military operations.

“There is a growing tendency among nations to use force, but exiting a conflict remains a challenge. Objectives must be clear, and there should be no prolonged engagement beyond that,” he said.
