Bandipora, April 7: Residents, commuters, and drivers in the busy Naidkhai market of Bandipora district have voiced serious concerns over the deplorable condition of public toilets and damaged infrastructure, saying the neglect is causing inconvenience and posing significant health risks.

While speaking to the Kashmir Convener locals said that the public facilities in the market have remained unattended for a long time. The toilets are in a dilapidated state, lacking proper maintenance and cleanliness. With the onset of summer, the situation worsens as a strong foul smell emanates from the bathrooms, making the surroundings highly unhygienic and uncomfortable for the public.

A local driver, Mansoor Ahmad, said that drivers, passengers, and daily commuters who depend on these facilities are the worst affected. He added that the absence of basic sanitation not only disrupts their daily routine but also increases the risk of infections and diseases due to the unhygienic conditions.

Another resident said that the damaged infrastructure itself has become a serious concern, as it adds to the health hazards. With summer approaching and temperatures expected to rise, the situation is likely to worsen further. The foul smell and unhygienic environment may lead to the spread of diseases, especially in a crowded marketplace where hundreds of people gather daily. He urged the authorities to take the matter seriously and resolve the issue at the earliest.

Residents also expressed disappointment over what they described as official inaction despite repeated appeals. “We have brought this issue to the notice of authorities several times, but nothing has changed on the ground,” said a local shopkeeper, adding that such negligence reflects poorly on civic responsibility.

They emphasized that maintaining proper sanitation in a crowded market is essential for public health and dignity. The present condition, they said, not only tarnishes the image of the area but also puts people’s well-being at risk.

The residents and drivers have urged the concerned authorities, including the Deputy Commissioner Bandipora, to intervene without delay and ensure that the public toilets are repaired, cleaned, and properly maintained. They appealed for immediate steps to address their genuine grievances and provide clean and functional facilities for everyone using the market area.
