Jammu, Mar 28: Strongly reacting to the recent alleged security breach involving National Conference president Dr Farooq Abdullah, Congress MLA from Bandipora Nizamuddin Bhat on Saturday termed the incident “condemnable” and said it reflected the state’s callousness, sending a message that even prominent personalities can be harassed at will.

Describing Dr Abdullah as an essence of the country and humanity, whose contributions were historic, MLA Bhat said the veteran leader’s protection was both a legal and moral responsibility of the state.

“When such useful personalities find themselves safe, they can further their contribution and give a boost to society. Then a common citizen can consider himself safe,” the legislator said in his address in the house, as per the Kashmir Convener.

He alleged that the security lapse was not merely an individual conspiracy but part of a larger design to make people feel vulnerable.

“Not only was Dr Farooq Abdullah given the message that he was not being properly protected. The message is the same. No matter who the culprit is, attacking immigrants, harassing both common people as well as prominent people — the state’s callousness to this extent is condemnable,” MLA Bhat said.

The MLA also questioned the accountability of security agencies, asserting that state power was not anyone’s private property.

“State power is not someone’s property. Everybody’s life is important. Dr Farooq is the most vulnerable person in the world,” he said, adding that internal enemies of the institution, culture and state power remained a serious concern.

He said, “We, as MLA representatives, our security has been betrayed. What is the state going to do? Why is this harassment?”

Asserting that the country had a “specific sensitivity” towards protecting its institutions, MLA Bandipora said personalities like Dr Farooq Abdullah had sacrificed for the mission of safeguarding people’s freedom. “This is our mission,” he added.
