Srinagar district has emerged as the top performing district across Jammu and Kashmir in key sectors for the year 2023-24 under District Good Governance Index (DGGI 4.0). The district has secured the 2nd rank among the 20 districts of JK with composite score of 6.5840, and also ranked 1st in the Kashmir division, standing out in critical governance domains like Industries & Allied Sectors (1st rank), Public Infrastructure & Utilities (2nd), and Environmental Management (3rd). In a place often associated with complex challenges, this model of quiet, focused, and efficient governance is a powerful counter-narrativeo one of hope, results, and resilience.
Equally significant is the economic validation that came with the release of DDP estimates by the Chief Minister. Srinagar, with just over 10% of the Union Territory’s population, contributes a striking 14.53% to J&K’s Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP). Its Per Capita Income (₹1,88,723) far exceeds the UT average, underlining the district’s pivotal role as an economic engine for the entire region. Whether it is entrepreneurship, tourism, IT services, or urban infrastructure, Srinagar is emerging as a laboratory for economic rejuvenation in a post-conflict environment.
This progress is not accidental—it is the result of sustained administrative vision, citizen participation, and better convergence of state schemes with district-level execution. With the government now expanding district-level data granularity through tools like DGGI and DDP, the focus on localized development and tailored policy interventions is stronger than ever.
However, with recognition comes responsibility. For Srinagar to retain and build on these ranks, the administration must now focus on deeper citizen engagement, digitization of services, sustainability in infrastructure, and further investments in human capital. The next phase of development must ensure that economic growth translates into inclusive opportunities—especially for the youth, women, and marginalized communities.
As Jammu and Kashmir seeks to script a new developmental narrative, Srinagar’s success stands as a powerful template for replication and inspiration. The message is clear: with visionary leadership, effective planning, and community participation, even the most complex regions can set benchmarks in governance and growth. Srinagar has shown the way.
