Bandipora, April 20: Govt Higher Secondary School Chuntimulla on Monday organised a debate on the topic “Should governments focus more on punishment or rehabilitation for drug users?” during the morning prayer assembly as part of the 100-days campaign against drug abuse.

An official spokesperson said on the occasion students presented diverse perspectives on the issue, reflecting both sides of the argument.

“While some participants stressed the importance of strict punishment as a deterrent against drug abuse, others strongly advocated for rehabilitation, describing addiction as a health issue that requires care, treatment and social support rather than punitive measures,” he added.

The event was attended by all staff members, including the Head of the Institution (HoI), Malik Waseem Raja, who appreciated the students for their confidence, awareness and well-articulated arguments.

He commended their ability to engage with a socially relevant issue and encouraged them to continue participating in such meaningful discussions.

The programme was coordinated by Attullah Khan, teacher at HSS Chuntimullah, who ensured the smooth conduct of debate and encouraged students to express their views openly.

Spokesperson further stated that the debate sparked a healthy discussion among participants and the audience, underlining the seriousness of the growing drug menace in society.

Addressing the gathering, speakers stressed the urgent need to eliminate drug abuse and urged students to play an active role in spreading awareness within their communities.

Speakers also highlighted that tackling drug addiction requires collective efforts from families, educational institutions and the government to ensure effective prevention and rehabilitation.

The program concluded with appreciation for all participants, as the institution reaffirmed its commitment to promoting awareness and fostering a drug free society.
