Puducherry, September 16: A media delegation from Kashmir, currently on a five-day exposure tour to Chennai organised by the Press Information Bureau (PIB), on Wednesday called on Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry, Kuniyil Kailashnathan, at Lok Niwas.
During an hour-long interaction, Kailashnathan spoke about his administrative experience and shared his vision for the development of Puducherry. He said he aims to transform the Union Territory into a major medical tourism hub.
The delegation was informed that Puducherry, with a population of around 15 lakh, currently has seven medical colleges, including the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER), an institution of national importance.
The LG also highlighted ongoing infrastructure projects, including the expansion of Puducherry airport’s runway from 1,500 metres to 2,500 metres to facilitate larger commercial aircraft and improve air connectivity. Railway and road expansion works are also expected to be completed by 2028, the delegation was informed.
Discussing industrial development in Kashmir, Kailashnathan said the Jammu and Kashmir government needs to provide incentives such as tax holidays and cheaper power to attract industrial investment, along with further improvements in transportation infrastructure.
The interaction provided the visiting journalists an opportunity to learn about Puducherry’s administrative and development initiatives.
The delegation is on a press tour to Chennai from September 13 to 19, organised by PIB Srinagar. During the tour, the journalists are visiting various institutions and infrastructure projects, meeting senior officials and beneficiaries and documenting the impact of public welfare schemes.
Later in the day, the delegation visited the Auroville Foundation, an experimental spiritual township, and interacted with its residents and members. – (PIB)
