Srinagar, June 19: The Faculty of Fisheries, SKUAST-K, commemorated World Fish Migration Day 2026 by organizing two awareness and outreach programmes aimed at promoting freshwater conservation and highlighting the ecological importance of migratory fish species in Kashmir.

The events were organised by the Division of Fisheries Resource Management, Faculty of Fisheries, SKUAST-K, in collaboration with the World Fish Migration Foundation, Netherlands.

The first programme, titled “Fresh Waters, Fresh Actions: A Nature Walk,” was conducted along the banks of the scenic Sindh River in Ganderbal district. The event focused on raising awareness about the critical role of healthy river ecosystems in sustaining migratory fish species, which contribute significantly to ecological balance, food security and fisheries livelihoods.

Participants engaged in field observations and interactive discussions on the growing threats to freshwater ecosystems, including pollution, habitat degradation and river fragmentation. The programme emphasized the importance of maintaining river connectivity to ensure the survival of migratory fish populations.

The nature walk was conducted under the guidance of Prof. (Dr.) Tasaduq H. Shah and Dr. Syed Talia Mushtaq, who highlighted the need for science-based conservation strategies and community participation to protect freshwater biodiversity in the Himalayan region.

The second event, “Swim to Survive: Celebrating Fish Migration in the Himalayas,” was held at New Wave Public School, Pandach, with the objective of engaging schoolchildren in learning about the extraordinary migratory journeys of fish species across Himalayan river systems.

The programme combined environmental education with creative and hands-on learning activities. Students enthusiastically participated in a DIY Fish Migration Tunnel Model, designed fish passages using recycled materials, and took part in a Fish Migration Board Game and Obstacle Game, which simulated the challenges fish face due to dams, pollution and habitat disruption.

Interactive storytelling sessions on migratory species, climate change and traditional ecological knowledge were also conducted. An on-the-spot art competition encouraged students to creatively depict themes related to rivers, fish migration and aquatic biodiversity.

The organizers expressed gratitude to the management of New Wave Public School for their support in conducting the programme. Special appreciation was extended to Chairman Bashir Ahmad Dar and Principal Bilal Ahmad Khan for promoting environmental awareness among young learners.

A prize distribution ceremony was held at the conclusion of the event, during which winners of various competitions and educational activities were awarded certificates and prizes.

The organizers also thanked the Dean, Faculty of Fisheries, SKUAST-K, for his guidance and support. Appreciation was extended to PhD research scholars and volunteers, including Tabish, Hudisa, Enab, Zaheer, Asrar, Iqra, Misba, Shafia, Saima and Arshi, for their contributions to the successful conduct of both programmes.

The events reinforced the message that healthy rivers and connected freshwater ecosystems are essential for the survival of migratory fish species and the long-term conservation of aquatic biodiversity in the Himalayan region.
