Marriage Didn’t Stop Dr Sumaira Achieve Academic Dream

“I am so lucky to have a family that boosted my morale”

SRINAGAR, MAY 8: For most women in Kashmir, marriage has traditionally marked the end of academic pursuits. But Dr Sumaira Rasool from the Tangmarg area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district has turned that script on its head — completing her PhD from Rajasthan University after marriage with the backing of the family she married into.

“Often after marriage, girls don’t follow their dreams. There may be circumstances that become hurdles. But for me, my in-laws became a source of strength, and my husband a helping hand,” Dr Sumaira told Kashmir Convener.

Hailing from the Takiya Bhatpora area of Tangmarg, she completed her BSc before marriage. After marriage, she went on to finish her B.Ed, MSc, and finally her doctorate.

“I got my MSc selection on the day of my wedding. I was laughing, wondering how to deal with it then. At first, I shared it with my father, because after marriage, the in-laws’ permission is valued. I thought, ‘Perhaps I can stop here.’ But it was my in-laws who allowed me to step forward,” she recalled.

Dr Sumaira firmly believes that educating a girl lights up an entire household. “I am so lucky to have a family that boosted my morale,” she said.

She emphasised that marriage adds responsibilities, not dead ends. “Sometimes there are challenges — normal in every married life — where one feels like giving up. But support kept me moving.”

Not for a job, but for society

Unlike many who pursue doctorates for career advancement, Dr Sumaira said her PhD is not about landing a government job. “Education is not only meant for a job. Through education, we can contribute in many ways to society. My dream is to be the reason for someone’s achievement — to guide them, support them, share knowledge.”

To every father, Dr Sumaira said: “Just as you play an important role in fulfilling your daughter’s dreams, similarly play an important role in fulfilling your daughter-in-law’s dreams. After all, she is also a daughter.”

“Don’t let your dreams sink. Follow them, no matter the challenges or situations. Dreams do come true,” Dr Sumaira told girls.

Dr Sumaira’s journey, she admits, is not typical. “For many, after marriage, the kitchen becomes the only world. I got freedom. And that made all the difference.”
