Visakhapatnam, April 29: Google on Tuesday broke ground on a large-scale artificial intelligence (AI) hub in Visakhapatnam (Vizag), Andhra Pradesh, marking the start of construction of what the company described as its largest digital infrastructure investment in India.
The project, developed in partnership with AdaniConneX and Nxtra by Airtel, aims to establish a gigawatt-scale AI ecosystem to support India’s growing digital and data infrastructure needs.
The groundbreaking ceremony was held at Tarluvada in Visakhapatnam and attended by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, state minister Nara Lokesh, and senior industry representatives including executives from Google Cloud, Adani Group, and Bharti Enterprises.
Officials said the AI hub will form part of a broader national industrial ecosystem aligned with India’s digital infrastructure expansion. The facility is expected to support high-capacity computing requirements, enable AI-driven applications, and strengthen data processing capabilities.
Speaking at the event, Vaishnaw said the project reflects the government’s vision of positioning India as a global technology leader and highlighted the strategic importance of digital infrastructure, including subsea cable connectivity being developed in Visakhapatnam.
Naidu said the project would contribute to the development of a technology corridor in Andhra Pradesh, with a focus on innovation, employment generation, and integration of local talent into the digital economy.
According to industry representatives, the facility is designed to integrate energy-efficient systems and leverage clean power sources, in line with sustainability goals. The infrastructure is expected to support large-scale data centre operations, ultra-low latency connectivity, and next-generation digital services.
Executives from partner organisations stated that the project aims to enhance India’s position in the global AI ecosystem by building capacity for advanced computing and supporting enterprise and startup innovation.
The initiative is also aligned with the broader national vision of “Viksit Bharat,” focusing on economic growth, digital transformation, and infrastructure development. (PIB)
