New Delhi, March 14: The Ministry of External Affairs’ Fact Check Unit on Friday dismissed as “fake and baseless” viral social media claims alleging that India had threatened Iran and that the Indian Navy had entered regional waters to launch a military operation against the country.

The clarification came after posts circulating on social media platforms claimed that India had warned Iran that if the Strait of Hormuz was not reopened, the Indian Navy would launch a strong military operation targeting Iranian installations.

Officials said the claims were fabricated and had no basis in fact.

“The viral claim that India has threatened Iran and that the Indian Navy has entered the seas against Iran is fake,” the government’s fact-check unit said in a statement.

The posts, widely shared on social media, suggested that the Indian Navy had been deployed against Iran amid rising tensions in West Asia.

Authorities said such claims were part of misinformation circulating online and urged people not to believe or share unverified content.

Officials said there had been no announcement or action by the Indian government indicating any military deployment against Iran.

The fact check clarification was issued as several misleading posts and manipulated images circulated online amid heightened geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

Government agencies have increasingly been issuing advisories and clarifications to counter misinformation related to international conflicts and security developments.

Officials said misinformation during sensitive geopolitical situations can create confusion and unnecessary panic.

Authorities have urged citizens and social media users to rely on official statements and credible sources for information regarding foreign policy or defence matters. [KNT]
