Srinagar, Aug 20: PDP leader Waheed Ur Rehman Para has questioned the reported appointment of an officer from outside the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly cadre to the Assembly Secretariat, calling for withdrawal of the order and terming the move a threat to the institution’s autonomy.

In a post on social media, Para said the Legislative Assembly was among the few institutions directly accountable to the people as it makes laws and holds the government accountable.

He alleged that, for the first time, the General Administration Department (GAD) had appointed an officer from outside the Assembly cadre to the Assembly Secretariat, breaking what he described as an established precedent.

“This is not a routine posting. It undermines the Assembly’s autonomy, dignity and authority,” Para said.

He questioned the decision being taken under an elected government, saying the move made the matter more concerning.

Para urged Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to withdraw the order and said the Assembly’s institutional autonomy must be protected. [KNT]
