Srinagar, Jan 18: Over three dozen Kashmiri students have safely returned to India from Iran on commercial flights amid a gradually stabilising situation, the Jammu and Kashmir Students Association (JKSA) said on Saturday, bringing relief to families across the Valley.
According to the Association, the students travelled on two separate commercial flights. One group flew from Shiraz to Sharjah and onward to Delhi on a connecting flight, while another group travelled directly from Tehran to Delhi. Officials of the Indian Embassy in Tehran facilitated the students’ movement to the airports and ensured their safety and security during the process.
JKSA National Convenor Nasir Khuehami said all the students travelled at their own expense and that a large number of pilgrims were also on board the same flights. He said the students have reached India safely and have since returned to their native places in Jammu and Kashmir. Khuehami added that several more students are expected to return from Sunday onwards after booking commercial flights.
Khuehami said the Indian Embassy in Tehran has informed the Association that the Government of India’s formal evacuation operations are currently on hold. He added that the Embassy is maintaining direct contact with the students and will inform them through official channels if an evacuation becomes necessary.
The JKSA said it remains in constant coordination with the Ministry of External Affairs and the Indian Embassy in Tehran, which are closely engaging with Iranian authorities. Khuehami said that students who continue to stay in Iran are safe and secure, and that the overall situation on the ground is steadily improving.
He further said that family members of the returning students expressed relief and appreciation to the Ministry of External Affairs and Indian Embassy officials on their arrival in India. The families, he said, conveyed their trust in the Government of India and thanked the authorities for the timely steps taken to ensure the safety of students during a period of uncertainty.
Welcoming the safe return of the students, the Association said the development has brought much-needed reassurance to anxious families across Jammu and Kashmir, adding that many more students studying in different parts of Iran are expected to return in the coming days.
