GDC Women Sopore Hosts ‘Literary Forum’ in memory of Mohiuddin Gowhar
Sopore, August 30: Government Degree College for Women Sopore, in collaboration with Sahitya Akademi New Delhi, on Saturday organised a one-day literary programme titled “Literary Forum” in memory of late Mohiuddin Gowhar, one of Sopore’s prominent poets.
The event began with the playing of the College Tarana, composed by noted poet and academic Dr. Shad Ramzan. The presidium was graced by the Principal of the College, Prof. Subeena Chiloo; veteran poet and Convener of Kashmiri Advisory Board, Sahitya Akademi, Dr. Shad Ramzan; President of Adbee Markaz Kamraz, M. Amin Bhat; and Muhtarama Begum Mehr, wife of late Gowhar.
Prof. Zubair Syed Masoodi presented a bouquet to M. Amin Bhat and Begum Mehr, while Principal Prof. Subeena Chiloo honoured Dr. Shad Ramzan with a memento as a token of gratitude for writing the College Tarana.
Dr. Syed Murtaza Geelani, Head of the Department of Education, formally welcomed the guests. In his address, Dr. Shad Ramzan, who also crafted the College Tarana, delivered detailed introductory remarks on Kashmiri language and literature, placing the poetry of Gowhar in its literary and cultural context.
The event also featured paper presentations by Hassan Azhar and Showkat Shafi, who highlighted the life and works of Mohiuddin Gowhar. A poetry recitation session, conducted by Shahnaz Rashid, saw renditions from Gowhar’s book “Door Pahan Dewarun Menz”, which drew wide appreciation from the audience. M. Amin Bhat also shared his reflections on the occasion.
In her presidential address, Principal Prof. Subeena Chiloo expressed gratitude to the Sahitya Akademi for choosing the college to host the event, and underlined the importance of celebrating literary luminaries who have enriched Kashmiri literature. She stressed the role of literature in shaping society and nurturing cultural heritage.
The programme concluded with a formal vote of thanks by Prof. Falak Naz, while Dr. Aadil Mohi Uddin, Head of the Department of Kashmiri, conducted the proceedings.
Among others who attended the programme were Mir Tariq, Aejaz Masoodi, G. N. Masoodi, G. M. Mangwalpori, G. M. Tawheedi, Rashid Roshan, Jawahar Ramzan, and several literary enthusiasts from the region.
