Project Himank Crowned Best Among 18 BRO Projects; Award Conferred by Raksha Mantri on BRO Day
Leh, May 7: In a landmark recognition, Project Himank has been adjudged the Best Project among 18 Border Roads Organisation (BRO) projects across India. The honour was conferred by Hon’ble Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh on BRO Day 2025, in acknowledgment of the project’s outstanding contributions to strategic infrastructure and connectivity in the high-altitude terrain of Ladakh.
Raised on 4 December 1985 and headquartered in Leh, Project Himank—famously known as The Mountain Tamers—has consistently set benchmarks in engineering excellence while operating in some of the most challenging conditions on Earth. Its crucial work under Operation Snow Leopard in Eastern Ladakh, ensuring connectivity to critical locations such as Daulat Beg Oldi, Karakoram Pass, Galwan, Demchok, Hanle, and Hotsprings, has proven vital for both national defence and regional upliftment.
This prestigious recognition comes on the heels of another milestone earlier this year, when Chief of Army Staff Gen Upendra Dwivedi awarded Project Himank the COAS Unit Appreciation—a first in BRO’s history. The twin honours in 2025 firmly cement Project Himank’s role as a pillar of strategic military logistics and border development.
Local communities in Ladakh have welcomed the award with pride, highlighting the project’s transformative impact—ranging from year-round connectivity and employment generation to the revitalization of tourism in remote villages that were once inaccessible during harsh winters.
In the silence of the mountains, it is work that speaks—Project Himank’s engineers and workers exemplify this ethos every day, braving sub-zero temperatures, extreme isolation, and treacherous terrain to drive progress in India’s most remote frontier. Their efforts are a living embodiment of the BRO motto: Shramen Sarvam Sadhyam—Everything is achievable through hard work.
The selection of Project Himank as the best among all BRO initiatives is a tribute to the indomitable spirit of its personnel. Their tireless dedication not only strengthens India’s borders but also builds enduring bonds with the people of Ladakh.
