The Tiranga: The Soul of a Nation

(A Story of Sacrifice, Pride, Unity and Generations)

The Tiranga may fly above us but lives within us. It is the hope and light of the nation’s dreams as it continues to soar high with pride and patriotism, carrying the legacy of a nation and its soul. Whenever it flies, so does India.

As the saffron white and green flutter in the morning breeze and the Ashoka Chakra slowly turns at its centre millions of Indians see not just a flag but a story of sacrifice and valor, of pride and patriotism and dreams of generations past who made India what it is today.

Thus is the Tiranga a memory and a promise bound in every thread, and carried by every soul who salutes its presence.

Long before independence, the national flag itself became an integral part of the freedom struggle. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, one of the central figures in the flag’s history, played a pivotal role in mobilizing the masses for the cause of Azadi , which was soon to arrive. In his presidential address to the Indian National Congress at Karachi in 1931, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel pays heartfelt tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of his countrymen in the freedom struggle. He talks of ‘heart unity’ that he feels is the need of the hour for the nation to come together and achieve independence. “What we want is a heart unity,” he says in the speech, which later becomes the very motto of the Tiranga, which binds the nation in unity beyond just paper and fabric.

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s words also personify the sacrifice of the millions of ordinary Indians – the farmers and the workers, the students and the womenfolk, the children and the aged – all who came together for a common goal and made countless sacrifices for the nation to stand tall and free.

And so it was on July 22, 1947, that the Constituent Assembly finally adopted the National Flag – the beloved tri-colour which flew over free India. The saffron, white and green, with the Ashoka Chakra at its heart, was an emblem of a nation resolute and unafraid, full of hope and promise of a future of peace and prosperity for all. Many years later, Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee talks of the Tricolour with all the fervour and pride of youth as he addresses the nation from the Red Fort on Independence Day, 2003. “The Tricolor is a symbol of our freedom, of our self-respect,” he declares, his words capturing the essence and soul of the nation in the form of the Tiranga.

The words of Atal Bihari Vajpayee immortalize the Tricolour as a symbol of the nation’s pride and self-respect. For an elderly person, the Tiranga evokes a memory of old, as he salutes the very flag under which India attained independence. For a child, the Tiranga represents a hope for the future as he gazes upon his nation’s symbol with eyes wide open. The very same Tiranga links the two generations – the old and the young, connecting them with a single thread – that of patriotism and national pride.

And what better way to invoke patriotism than through the youth? Though unaware of the sacrifices of the freedom fighters, the young and innocent eyes of an Indian child can be drawn to the beauty and importance of the Tiranga – the Tricolour that has fought and bled for the nation.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his message on Har Ghar Tiranga , encourages Indians to build a deeper emotional connect with the Tiranga. “Our Tricolour is our pride and a source of inspiration to always give our best for the nation,” he says in his message, which beautifully encapsulates the very essence of the national flag. The message highlights the opportunity for every citizen to contribute to the growth and development of the country – in whichever small or big way possible. Citizens across the country participate in the Har Ghar Tiranga movement, finding self-expression and an outlet for their patriotism through the national flag as they wave it from their homes, balconies, schools, colleges and elsewhere.

A flag that flies above homes and streets and hearts across the country unites individuals and communities as the nation collectively remembers and salutes its past while moving fearlessly towards the future.

Saffron speaks of sacrifice and valor, while white signifies peace and truth. Green promises prosperity, growth and hope while the Ashoka Chakra at the centre reminds every citizen of the resilience and spirit required to move forward – for the nation and for the self. However, the Tiranga’s most endearing quality lies in its ability to unite people regardless of caste, creed or background. It resides in the hearts of those who dedicate their lives to the betterment of the country – the teachers and the farmers, the students and the doctors, the soldiers and the scientists – each playing his or her part in the development of the nation. For every citizen of the Republic of India, patriotism takes myriad forms – as honesty, integrity, compassion, education, service to the nation and so on.

As the Tricolour waves high, the past, present, and future of the nation appear to merge as one. Sacrifice, dedication, and dreams fuel the spirit of the nation as it salutes the Tiranga – a memory of what the nation stood for and where it came from, and a promise of what it hopes to achieve in the future.
