Gusty winds lash parts of Kashmir

Srinagar, Apr 16: Strong gusty winds battered several parts of Kashmir on Thursday evening, damaging rooftops and electricity poles, even as the Meteorological Centre Srinagar forecast generally cloudy conditions with intermittent light rain and thundershowers across Jammu and Kashmir till April 19.

A senior metrological department official at Srinagar told Kashmir Convener that while April 16 would remain largely dry, isolated places may witness brief spells of light rain or thundershowers accompanied by gusty winds towards the afternoon.

From April 17 to 19, the weather is likely to remain generally cloudy with intermittent spells of light rain and thundershowers at many places, particularly during morning and late evening hours, the official added.

The MeT has warned of gusty winds reaching speeds of 40-50 kmph and possible hailstorms at isolated locations during this period.

The weather is expected to improve from April 20 to 24, with generally dry conditions prevailing across the Union Territory, the official said.

Similar conditions are forecast for April 25 and 26, though brief spells of light rain or thundershower with gusty winds may occur at isolated places towards the afternoon.

Officials reported that Thursday evening’s strong winds caused minor disruptions in power supply across several areas of the valley.

In an advisory, the MeT department asked farmers to suspend farm operations from April 17 to 19 in view of the expected weather activity.

“The advisory has been issued as a precautionary measure to minimise potential damage to crops and ensure safety during adverse weather conditions,” an official said.

The department has urged people to remain cautious, especially during periods of strong winds and thunderstorms, and to follow official advisories.
