Locals, Govt join hands to restore pristine glory of Gilsar, Khushalsar lakes

Srinagar, Feb 27: The government with the active support of people have decided to the restore the pristine glory of the once-famous Gilsar lake in Srinagar.

Divisional Commissioner PK Pole and Deputy Commissioner Srinagar, Dr Shahid Iqbal Choudhary visited the Gilsar, Khushalsar and initiated the process of restoring the glory of the once prominent lake.

The process was started after a local NGO namely Nigeen Lake Conservation Organization (NLCO) came up with an initiative 'Ehsaas', aimed to preserve the once prominent water body.

Under the initiative, the process of cleaning Khushar lake was initiated.

Pole while talking to media persons, said, “The Gilsar lake was named after a Bird (Gill) but now, we can’t see any such a bird here, which is the outcome of a polluted environment around.”

He said to restore this environment, the local community has taken a lead and decided to save that ecological environment.

“The local residents today that with the support of the government has decided that the pristine glory of both the lakes should be restored,” he said.

“I am here just to congratulate the people and to convey them that the administration will actively support in the process," Pole said.

On illegal constructions around the lake, Pole said,  "We have started the demarcation of Gilsar and Khusalsar and almost  70 encroachments have been identified. We have sent a notice to them as well, this matter is with the Court now and soon they will have to vacate the land “

Chairman NLCO, Manzoor Ahmed Wangnoo said that the aim of the mission Ahsaan is to clean, restore and strive to save these prominent wetlands. "With the full cooperation of administration and locals, our teams will soon be successful in realizing the dream of clean wetlands,” he said.

“I am thankful to Div Com and DC who visited in this bad weather and make this meeting successful and helped us in starting this cleaning process in a very minimum time," he said—(KNO)
