Light Rains, thunder showers likely in J&K till May 21: MeT

SRINAGAR, MAY 19: The Meteorological Department on Tuesday forecast light rain, thundershowers, gusty winds and hailstorms at scattered to several places across Jammu and Kashmir till May 21, even as Jammu city recorded a scorching 42°C and Srinagar settled at 30.7°C — over five notches above normal.

A senior metrological department official told Kashmir Convener said

weather is likely to remain partly to generally cloudy till May 21, with spells of rain and thunderstorms mainly during afternoon and evening hours.

He said possibility of thunder, lightning and gusty winds with speeds of 40-50 kmph exists at a few places in both divisions during May 19-21,” he added.

The department said conditions will remain generally dry during the forenoon from May 22 to 25, though brief showers may occur at isolated to scattered places later in the day. Between May 26 and 28, dry weather is expected, while light rain and thundershowers are likely at isolated places from May 29 to 31.

The MeT also warned of hot and dry weather at many places over the next two days, with isolated heatwave conditions expected in the Jammu division.

Temperature data compiled by Kashmir Weather Watch showed Srinagar at 30.7°C (5.3°C above normal), Qazigund at 30.2°C (5.8°C above normal), and Kokernag at 29.2°C (5.4°C above normal). Gulmarg recorded 21.6°C, also 5.3°C above normal, while Pahalgam settled at 22.4°C.

In the Jammu division, the summer capital recorded 42°C — 3.9°C above normal — while Katra touched 39°C, a departure of 5.4°C. Banihal, Batote and Bhaderwah recorded 31°C, 30.6°C and 30.4°C respectively.

In Ladakh, Leh recorded a maximum of 21.6°C and Nubra Valley 18.1°C.
