Jammu, May 19: Jammu and Kashmir Minister for Forests and Tribal Affairs Javed Ahmed Rana on Tuesday visited the Sidhra area of Jammu and met families affected by the recent demolition drive, assuring them of rehabilitation and support from the government.

During the visit, Rana interacted with residents whose houses were reportedly damaged during the demolition process and listened to their grievances regarding the incident.

According to the affected families, several residents possess valid revenue documents related to the land but alleged that their claims and appeals were not considered during the demolition drive.

Expressing concern over the situation, the minister said families possessing legitimate land documents should not face such treatment. He stated that the affected families would be rehabilitated and informed them that an inquiry into the incident was being initiated.

“Those found responsible for any excesses or high-handedness will be held accountable,” Rana said during the interaction.

The minister also said arrangements were being made at rehabilitation sites to provide essential facilities including electricity, water supply and food to the affected families.

Referring to the affected community, Rana said the tribal population had contributed significantly to the region and remained closely connected with the pastoral traditions and cultural heritage of Jammu.

He further stated that safeguarding the rights and dignity of tribal communities was the responsibility of all institutions.

Addressing the broader administrative issues related to the incident, the minister said situations of this nature sometimes arise due to the “dual governance structure” in Jammu and Kashmir, which, according to him, can create gaps in coordination and accountability.

Rana said he had taken up the matter with both the Lieutenant Governor’s administration and Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.

He reiterated that the elected government remained committed to ensuring rehabilitation of affected families and preventing similar in cidents in the future.
