Kulgam Police Solve Hit-and-Run Case Within Hour; Accused Driver Arrested

KULGAM, APRIL 27: Kulgam Police acted swiftly to solve a hit-and-run case within an hour after a road traffic accident involving three school-going girls.

Today at about 15:45 hours, Police Station Qazigund received reliable information regarding an accident at Kulbagh–Qazi Mohalla Link Road, where an i-20 vehicle bearing registration No. JK03H-9382, driven by Rayees Ahmad Rather S/O Abdul Kareem Rather, while travelling from Kurigam towards Qazigund, hit three school-going girls.

The injured girls have been identified as Fatima Jan and Tahmeena Jan.
Both daughters of Mohd Altaf Parray, residents of Shampora, Qazigund and Aliya Jan D/o Mohd Altaf Zahid, resident of Salyaloo

In the incident, Fatima Jan sustained critical injuries, while the other two girls received minor injuries. All the injured were immediately shifted to Emergency Hospital Qazigund for treatment.

Taking prompt cognizance of the matter, Police Station Qazigund registered Case FIR No. 102/2026 under Sections 281, 125(A) BNS, and investigation was immediately taken up.

The accused driver had fled from the spot after the accident; however, due to the swift and tactful action of Kulgam Police, he was apprehended within an hour, thereby solving the hit-and-run case promptly.

SSP Kulgam Aanayat Ali Chowdhary-IPS appealed to all drivers to maintain moderate speed near schools, markets, residential areas, and busy roads, remain alert while driving, avoid rash and negligent driving, and strictly obey traffic regulations. He further appealed to the public that in the event of any accident, priority should be given to shifting the injured to the nearest hospital and saving precious lives rather than fleeing from the spot. He also urged citizens to immediately inform police or emergency services so that timely assistance can be provided.

Kulgam Police reiterates its commitment towards ensuring road safety and taking strict action against violators of traffic laws.
