New Delhi, Sep 1 : Minister of State (MoS) for Defence Sanjay Seth on Tuesday highlighted Kashmir’s growing role in India’s cricket bat manufacturing sector, saying thousands of bats are produced in the region and exported globally.
Speaking at the second annual Trident Lecture organised by the Centre for Joint Warfare Studies (CENJOWS), Sanjay Seth as per Kashmir Convener said India exports 30 lakh cricket bats every year, with Kashmir emerging as a key hub.
“Friends, you will be surprised to know that every year we export 30 lakh cricket bats. Not many people know about this,” Seth said.
“When you go to Kashmir or Srinagar, you will see thousands of bats lying on both sides of the road,” he added, underlining the scale of production in the Valley.
The Minister also spoke about grassroots sporting aspirations in the region, citing the example of a child from a poor neighbourhood who dreams of representing the country.
“He says, ‘I will play for the state and the country. I will represent the country.’ And then he asks, ‘Who will give me a bat?'” Seth remarked.
“Look at India. 30 lakh bats. This is a manufacturing hub. Prime Minister Modi is talking about this. We are inviting the youth. This is an opportunity,” he said.
Minister further noted that India’s youth are actively engaged in every sport, and reaffirmed the government’s target to host the Commonwealth Games in 2030 and the Olympic Games in 2036.
