Srinagar, Aug 21: Jammu and Kashmir Education Minister Sakina Itoo on Friday said the Union Territory has recorded a 17 per cent increase in school enrolment over the last two years, calling it the government’s “biggest achievement” in the education sector.
“The landmark decisions taken by the Chief Minister in the past two years are now showing results,”minister Itoo told reporters here as per Kashmir Convener.
The National Conference leader said the administration has focused on smart classrooms, infrastructure upgrades, and project-based learning to improve educational outcomes.
She also stressed that the talent of children in Jammu and Kashmir is unparalleled, but requires institutional support to flourish.
“Today, enrolment has increased by 17 per cent. This is our biggest achievement,” she said, adding that the government’s goal is to ensure that “no child in Jammu and Kashmir lives without education.”
On staffing, minister Itoo said appointment orders for around 700 new lecturers have been issued and recruitment rules finalised through legislative measures. She also noted that free education is being provided to underprivileged students.
Responding to queries about recruitment rules for employees of new Government Medical Colleges (GMCs), the minister said the rules — pending for a decade — are being expedited.
“Their demand is genuine. We have assured them that recruitment rules, both gazetted and non-gazetted, will be finalised by the end of September,” she said.
She added that the government has held meetings with stakeholders and is committed to addressing the issue on priority.
