Srinagar, Sep 24: The Jammu and Kashmir government has approved the transfer of 3 Kanals of land in Arampora, Sopore, to the Agriculture Production Department for establishing a vegetable market cum mandi, the Assembly was informed on Thursday.
According to an official reply tabled in the House, the Council of Ministers approved the proposal via Decision No. 113/11/2026 dated September 10, 2026. The land, identified as ‘Shamilat Deh (Mehfooz Kachharai)’ under Khasra No. 280-min at Village Arampora, Tehsil Sopore in Baramulla district, has been earmarked for the ‘Sabzi Mandi’ project.
The reply was furnished in response to a starred question by MLA Irshad Rasool Kar regarding the promotion of vegetable cultivation and the establishment of marketing infrastructure in the Sopore constituency.
The government stated that the Agriculture Production Department, in coordination with the District Administration, Baramulla, will develop the Mandi with modern facilities. This will include transit storage and other requisite infrastructure for efficient handling, marketing, and post-harvest management of locally produced vegetables.
Highlighting the steps taken to promote vegetable cultivation in the Arampora belt over the last three years, the reply noted that the area is a traditional vegetable-growing belt covering approximately 60 hectares. The Department has provided various agricultural machinery, irrigation facilities, and protected cultivation structures to growers.
As per official data, assistance provided in the last three years includes one tractor, three power weeders, two brush cutters, 41 irrigation pump sets, 22 dug wells, three battery-operated sprayers, 21 greenhouses, and 17 canvas pipes. The Department also provides quality seeds and technical guidance under applicable schemes.
Addressing the query on cold storage facilities, the government clarified that no specific provision has been made for a Controlled Atmosphere (C.A.) Storage or Cold Storage facility at Arampora at present.
However, eligible private entrepreneurs may establish such facilities by availing financial assistance under applicable schemes, subject to prescribed norms. The reply noted that the Horticulture Department provides subsidies for C.A. Storage facilities under schemes such as MIDH, HADP, and JKCIP. At present, 68 C.A. Storage facilities with an aggregate capacity of 2.97 LMT have been established across Jammu and Kashmir.
