Srinagar, Sep 24: The Jammu and Kashmir Government on Thursday said it was following a regulated and sustainable approach to mineral extraction to balance environmental protection with the availability of construction material for development and infrastructure projects.
The government stated this in a written reply in the Legislative Assembly to a question raised by MLA Irfan Hafiz Lone regarding measures being taken to address environmental concerns arising from mining activities while ensuring adequate availability of construction material in Jammu and Kashmir.
According to the reply, mineral extraction in the Union Territory is regulated under the Jammu and Kashmir Minor Mineral Concession, Storage, Transportation and Prevention of Illegal Mining Rules, 2016, along with applicable environmental and statutory requirements.
The government said the regulatory framework was intended to ensure that mineral extraction is carried out in accordance with prescribed norms while meeting the material requirements of ongoing development and infrastructure works. [KNT]
