Indian Railways Approves ₹895 Cr Projects to Boost Metro Capacity, Strengthen Bridge Infra

New Delhi, May 2: Indian Railways has sanctioned infrastructure projects worth ₹895.30 crore aimed at enhancing metro rail capacity and strengthening critical bridge infrastructure.

A major portion—₹671.72 crore—has been allocated for upgrading the North–South Corridor of Kolkata Metro.

The project includes installation of seven new traction substations and augmentation of existing auxiliary and traction substations. The power system will be upgraded from 11 KV to 33 KV between key sections including Esplanade Metro Station and Kavi Subhash Metro Station, along with improvements in elevated stretches from Netaji Metro Station to Kavi Subhash.

Originally built in the 1980s for 5-minute train intervals, the upgraded system will now support a 2.5-minute headway, significantly increasing line capacity to meet rising passenger demand.

Officials noted that existing infrastructure had reached capacity limits and faced maintenance challenges due to ageing equipment. The upgrade is expected to ensure reliable power supply and smoother operations.

In addition, ₹223.58 crore has been approved for reconstruction and strengthening of Bridge No. 520 across the Damodar River in the Adra Division under South Eastern Railway.

The bridge, originally constructed in 1903 (down line) and 1965 (up line), has shown structural distress, necessitating redevelopment of its foundation and substructure. The project also includes yard remodelling and track works in the Madhukunda–Damodar section.

This stretch is a crucial link between Asansol and Tatanagar and forms part of a key freight corridor, particularly for coal transport in the Sini–Purulia–Asansol belt.

The redevelopment is expected to enhance safety, reliability, and operational efficiency, while boosting connectivity for industries in the Durgapur–Asansol region, including major steel and power units.

The Railways said the projects mark a significant step towards modern, safe, and high-capacity rail systems. While metro upgrades will improve commuter experience in Kolkata, the bridge project will strengthen freight movement and industrial connectivity. (PIB)
