Excise Department Leads Joint Operation to Destroy Illegal Poppy Cultivation in Sumbal

Bandipora, April 28: In a significant crackdown on illegal narcotics activities, the Excise Department Bandipora, in coordination with the Police, Agriculture, and Revenue Departments, carried out a successful joint operation to destroy illicit poppy cultivation in the Rakhe Shivat area of Sumbal in Bandipora district.

The operation was launched following specific intelligence inputs regarding unlawful poppy cultivation in the area. Acting promptly, the Excise Department spearheaded the raid with active support from allied departments to ensure immediate action against the illegal activity.

During the drive, approximately 1.5 marlas of land under illicit poppy cultivation was identified. The entire crop was destroyed on the spot, effectively preventing its potential misuse in the production of narcotic substances.

Officials stated that the action reflects the Excise Department’s proactive and sustained efforts to curb the cultivation of narcotic crops and dismantle the supply chain of drug-related activities in the district.

In this connection, a case has been registered at Police Station Sumbal under FIR No. 88/2026 under Sections 8/18 of the NDPS Act, 1985.

The Excise Department issued a stern warning that illegal poppy cultivation is a serious punishable offence and that strict legal action will be taken against violators. Officials further reiterated that anti-narcotics enforcement drives will continue with heightened vigilance in the coming days.

Seeking public cooperation, the department urged citizens to share credible information regarding drug trafficking or illegal cultivation, emphasizing that collective community support is essential in building a drug-free society.
