Srinagar, June 05: In compliance with directions issued by the Ministry of Mines, Government of India vide F.No.-8/1/2026-MinesV dated 29.05.2026, the District Mineral Office, Srinagar carried out a plantation drive under the nationwide campaign ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ at Sekinar Mine, Samman Limestone Mine, and Tulpal Mine of District Srinagar.

The drive was led by Mohsin Noor, District Mineral Officer, Srinagar. Pinus Roxburghii (Chir Pine) saplings were planted at all three sites to promote ecological restoration and slope stabilization in post-mining areas, in honour of Planet Earth.

Also present during the drive were Atul Bhandekar, Head of Samman Mine; Mysar Khan, Mines Manager and Head of Sekinar and Tulpal Mines; and Javed Ahmed, Mine Geologist. Leaseholders and local field staff also participated to ensure community involvement.

Speaking on the occasion, DMO Srinagar said that the department is committed to “concurrent reclamation” as mandated under approved Mine Closure Plans. “Planting Chir Pine, a native species well-adapted to Himalayan mine benches, will stabilize degraded slopes, check soil erosion, and contribute to carbon sequestration. This is our contribution towards building a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future,” he said.

All saplings have been geo-tagged and will be monitored for survival through the department’s e-surveillance mechanism. Mines-wise documentation of the drive is being submitted to the Ministry of Mines, GoI as directed.

This initiative reinforces the UT Administration’s commitment to sustainable mining practices and the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign, aligning mineral development with environmental responsibility.
