Jammu, Sep 22: BJP MLA from Nagrota Devyani Rana on Tuesday hit out at the opposition for playing “divisive politics” in the Assembly and asserted that any attempt to balkanize the Jammu division or distort history will not be tolerated.
Speaking to Kashmir Convener outside the Assembly, MLA Devyani said, “Today, in the Assembly, the way we saw divisive politics is very saddening.”
The BJP leader, who represents the Nagrota constituency, said the Jammu division comprises 10 out of 10 districts and cautioned against attempts to misrepresent its geography and history.
“I would like to give a geography lesson. The Pir-Panjal range starts from Himachal Pradesh, goes to Gulmarg via Rajouri-Poonch, and then goes to POJK. This easily muddles history and geography. The person listening should not understand what is going on,” she said.
Making the party’s position clear, the BJP leader said, “We would like to make it clear that historical inaccuracies will not be tolerated. The balkanization of the Jammu division will not be tolerated.”
She said the BJP stands with the affected people and asked where the talk of balkanization had come from when all 10 districts of the Jammu division were reeling under the impact of floods.
“When we talk about Jammu and Kashmir, we talk about the benefit of Jammu and Kashmir. If you want to talk about the rights of the people affected by the floods, we are standing with you. There was a flood in Jammu, Akhnoor, Rajouri, Poonch, and in the entire Jammu division. 10 out of 10 districts are suffering because of the floods. Then where did the balkanization of the Jammu division come from?” she asked.
On the holiday declared in honour of Maharaja Hari Singh, MLA Nagrota said the decision was taken after recognising his historical significance, and credited former minister and senior BJP leader Devendra Singh Rana for his contribution in the matter.
“Aside from the inaccuracies of geography, we have to establish this context historically. If you want to keep your point, you keep your point, no one has stopped you. But to say that Maharaja Hari Singh’s leave, which I still remember, Swargi Devendra Singh Rana Sahab had made this request in front of Mahanot Sinha. And as a statesman, he recognized the historical significance of Maharaja Hari Singh in the history of Jammu and Kashmir and India. So he notified this leave,” she said.
Questioning the opposition’s intent, MLA Devyani Rana said, “CM Omar Abdullah already knows what the process and procedure is. The government is his own. So who is he talking to? When he was elected in 2024, what is the question now? Whatever you want to do, do it.”
“But Maharaja Hari Singh’s leave, which was brought with great effort, in which Swargi Devendra Singh Rana also had a very significant contribution, we will not allow you to do politics on that. And we will definitely not allow you to cancel this leave,” she added.
