Srinagar, Feb 12: E-rickshaws in central Kashmir's Srinagar district are experiencing a notable drop in passengers following a series of accidents over the past few months, leaving drivers uncertain about their future
The traditional diesel rickshaws, once the backbone of urban transportation, have been gradually replaced by E-rickshaws, offering affordability and eco-friendliness.
With over 17 lakh E-rickshaws operating across India and 1500 in Kashmir alone, these vehicles have positively impacted livelihoods and the environment.
However, recent months have witnessed a troubling surge in E-rickshaw accidents, causing profound concern among drivers like Gulzar and Amir.
Gulzar, expressing his worries, stated, "I never imagined the challenges of supporting my family would be this overwhelming."
Similarly, Amir, another E-rickshaw driver, shared his fears, saying, "As the sole breadwinner, the thought of something happening to me fills me with dread."
The alarming statistic of over 47 accidents in the last two months, including a recent tragedy in Jhelum, has sent shockwaves through the community.
This has led to a notable decline in passengers, exacerbating the financial struggles of drivers already grappling with the harsh winter conditions.
Two drivers lamented, "Every empty seat not only represents a loss of income but also underscores the uncertainty of our future."
Fatima, a regular passenger, highlighted safety concerns, stating, "My family now prohibits me from using E-rickshaws due to the rising number of accidents."
Similarly, Hajra Bano, citing her fears, expressed, "Even a simple trip to the doctor now fills me with anxiety."
To address these safety concerns, Regional Transport Office officials are taking decisive action, including increased enforcement and the installation of Intelligent Traffic Management Systems (ITMS).
According to an official, "Our aim is to create a safer environment for all road users." The Deputy Superintendent of Traffic emphasised, "Stricter enforcement is necessary to curb driver negligence and underage operators."
Furthermore, a toll-free number, 103, has been established for citizens to report traffic-related complaints promptly, he said.
“Efforts are also underway to crack down on E-rickshaws operating without proper number plates and illegal dealers, ensuring compliance with regulations and enhancing overall road safety,” the official added.
