J&K to Receive More Rains in Next Few Days, Heavy Downpour for Jammu This Week

Katra received the heaviest rainfall since 1980, breaking the earlier record of July 2019

Srinagar 19 July (CNS): The Meteorological Department Srinagar on Wednesday predicted more rains in the parts of J&K from 20th-22th July, with heavy rainfall expected in some places of Jammu in the ongoing week.    

As per a MeT official, intermittent light to moderate rain accompanied by thundershowers would be observed at many places of Jammu and scattered places of Kashmir from 20th-22th July.  It further said that the ongoing rain, which is going on in the Jammu region, Srinagar and other parts of Kashmir, would continue for 3-4 hours. 

It was further said that the Jammu region would likely receive “heavy” to “very heavy” rain during this week. Regarding the Katra district, the weatherman said that the district has received 315.4 mm of rain in 24 hours, which is the heaviest rainfall since 1980. “Earlier, it was 292.4 mm on the 31st of July 2019,” said the official. 

The MeT official also warned of the possible risk of flash floods, mudslides, and landslides in risk-prone areas due to heavy rains.  

Regarding the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, the traffic officials said that the NH-44 has been blocked owing to landslides and mudslides, the clearances for which have been going on.  

In view of the rainfall, District Commissioner, Ramban in a tweet said, “All Govt./Pvt. Schools functioning in District Ramban shall remain closed on 19-07-2023 due to inclement weather conditions. Besides, all HOIs shall ensure that students who have attended school today must reach their homes safely.” (CNS)
