Bandipora, June 16: Fayaz Sajad Sufi, a young and compassionate para medic from the north Kashmir's Bandipora district, has been tirelessly working beyond his duty hours to organize blood for patients in need across the district.
Inspired by a distressing experience during the COVID-19 lockdown, Sufi was driven to take action and ensure no one faced the helplessness he witnessed.
During the lockdown, Sufi encountered a heart-wrenching situation when a pregnant woman urgently required O-negative blood. “The desperate race to find a donor consumed every minute, amplifying the family's anxiety. Finally, a donor was located from a far-off place,” he said. “This experience gave me nightmares compelling him to establish a contact group and a registry of blood donors to address such critical situations promptly”.
Sufi, who serves as a Tuberculosis Health Visitor at DH Bandipora, has assembled a list of 300 potential donors and volunteers named Al-Hamza Blood Group. Whenever the gynecology or emergency department of the hospital requires blood, Sufi activates his dedicated network of donors, ensuring swift arrangements.
To expand their reach and maximize the chances of finding suitable donors, Sufi and his team circulate appeals through social media channels with the assistance of local media persons.
Moreover, Sufi has curated a comprehensive "data bank" containing contact details of over a thousand frequent donors, collected from various social media platforms. This extensive network allows him to mobilize resources efficiently and save precious lives.
His self-initiated contact group and donor registry have streamlined the process of arranging blood during critical situations.
Through strategic use of social media and collaboration with local media, Sufi has expanded his network and increased the likelihood of finding donors when time is of the essence.
