Srinagar, Oct 10: Around 150 students are participating in the Annual Athletics Meet (Men and Women) that commenced at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar on Saturday.

Organised by the institute’s Student Activity and Sports (SAS) Centre, the meet aims to promote physical fitness, sportsmanship and healthy competition while encouraging students to balance academics with sports and extracurricular activities.

Dean Students Welfare Prof. Mohammad Abid Bazaz said sports played an important role in the holistic development of students by fostering leadership, discipline, teamwork and resilience.

“Education is not confined to classrooms. Participation in sports helps students develop leadership, discipline, teamwork and resilience,” he said, adding that the institute remained committed to providing opportunities for students to pursue their interests alongside academics.

Dr Manoj Kumar, In-charge Faculty, SAS, said the event was part of the institute’s efforts to encourage greater participation in sports and fitness activities. He said the meet offered students an opportunity to showcase their abilities, build confidence and develop a spirit of healthy competition.

SAS Officer Kowsar Ali Mir said the participation of around 150 men and women students highlighted the importance of providing opportunities for students to engage in sports. She said the centre aimed to make physical fitness an integral part of campus life.

SAS Assistant Sohail Ahmad Baba said the centre was working to facilitate student participation and ensure the smooth conduct of sporting activities. He said such events provided students a platform to demonstrate their talent and encouraged an active and healthy lifestyle.
