Srinagar, Sept 23: The Indian Army, under the aegis of Chinar Corps and in coordination with the Directorate General of Armed Forces Medical Services (DGAFMS), will conduct a seven-day specialised medical outreach initiative, Operation Drishti, from September 23 to 30 to provide cataract care to civilians and veterans in remote areas of Kashmir.
The mega cataract surgery camp will focus on residents of Tangdhar and other areas with limited access to specialised ophthalmic facilities.
The initiative follows screening camps conducted by 92 Base Hospital at several locations, including Tangdhar, Uri, Bandipora, Khanabal, Kangan, Dawar and Baramulla. According to the Army, 400 patients have been identified and shortlisted for cataract surgery.
A specialised surgical team from Army Hospital (Research & Referral), New Delhi, led by Brigadier (Dr.) Sanjay Kumar Mishra, Head of Ophthalmology, has been mobilised for the programme. The Army said advanced diagnostic equipment and microsurgical facilities have been deployed for the surgeries, which will be provided free of cost.
The surgery programme will be conducted in two phases.
The first phase, scheduled for September 24 and 25, will cover 200 patients at the Underground Forward Surgical Centre of the former 328 Field Hospital in Tangdhar.
The second phase, scheduled for September 28 and 29, will cover another 200 patients at 92 Base Hospital, BB Cantonment, Srinagar.
The Army said the specialist team will work in coordination with 92 Base Hospital and other medical and non-medical units during the programme.
