Bandipora, September 9: The 16th District Bandipora Badminton Championship 2026 began at the Indoor Police Hall, Bandipora, on Tuesday, with around 150 players and eight officials taking part in the four-day tournament.
The championship was inaugurated by the Senior Superintendent of Police, Bandipora, in the presence of Additional Deputy Commissioner Zaffar Shawal, President of the District Bandipora Badminton Association Shabnum Kounser, Vice President Ishfaq Ahmad and General Secretary Mudasir Ahmad.
Around 100 spectators witnessed the opening-day proceedings.
Speaking at the inaugural ceremony, the SSP Bandipora appreciated the efforts of the District Badminton Association in promoting the sport in the district despite limited infrastructure. He assured the organisers of full cooperation for the smooth conduct of the championship.
The opening-day matches included competitions in the senior categories. In the senior men’s category, Firdous Ahmad Mir defeated Salman Nazir to secure a place at the top, while Shoaib reached the final after defeating Aqib Hussain of Sumbal.
In the senior women’s category, Syeda Zehra won the title after defeating Urba Bano.
The four-day championship will feature competitions across different categories, providing local players an opportunity to compete at the district level.
