Baramulla, Sep 5: Principal Secretary, Home Department, Jammu and Kashmir, Chandraker Bharti (IAS), on Saturday visited the ongoing archaeological excavations at the Zehanpora site in Baramulla district, being carried out by the Centre of Central Asian Studies (CCAS), University of Kashmir, in collaboration with the Directorate of Archives, Archaeology and Museums.
During his visit, Bharti took stock of the archaeological investigations and reviewed the progress of the excavation. He was given a tour of the site, where the research team briefed him about the archaeological remains, cultural material, and various stages of the ongoing field investigations.
A detailed presentation on the excavation’s objectives, methodology, and preliminary findings was made by Dr. Mohammad Ajmal Shah, Director of Excavations. He apprised the Principal Secretary of the significance of the Zehanpora site and its potential for contributing to a better understanding of the region’s archaeological and cultural history.
Bharti interacted with the members of the excavation team and appreciated the efforts being made by the CCAS and the Directorate of Archives, Archaeology and Museums towards documenting and preserving Jammu and Kashmir’s rich archaeological heritage.
Zehanpora, a 2,000-year-old Buddhist archaeological site, holds considerable potential for providing valuable insights into the region’s ancient settlement patterns, material culture, and way of life. The first phase of excavation yielded significant findings, including a pebble wall, iron nails, pottery fragments, and a human skeleton. The second phase of excavation is currently underway.
