New Delhi, June 8: In a moment of immense pride for the Indian Army, Major Bhargav Kalita, who served with the Army’s 50 Rashtriya Rifles of the Kumaon Regiment, was conferred the prestigious Shaurya Chakra by President Droupadi Murmu during the Defence Investiture Ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

The gallantry award was bestowed upon Major Kalita in recognition of his exceptional courage, outstanding leadership and unwavering commitment to duty during a high-risk counter-terrorism operation in Jammu and Kashmir.

Operating in one of the most challenging security environments, Major Kalita displayed remarkable bravery while leading his team against heavily armed terrorists in the dense forests of Dachigam. Despite facing grave danger, he led from the front and played a decisive role in the successful execution of the operation.

Officials said his courageous actions contributed significantly to the neutralisation of Junaid, a dreaded local terrorist allegedly involved in multiple attacks on civilian workers in the Ganderbal district. The attacks had left several workers injured, while some later succumbed to their injuries, creating fear and insecurity among local residents.

Major Kalita’s leadership and determination under hostile conditions ensured the success of the mission and reaffirmed the Indian Army’s commitment to safeguarding civilian lives and maintaining peace and security in the region, officials added.

The Shaurya Chakra, India’s third-highest peacetime gallantry award, is conferred upon personnel who display extraordinary courage, valour and self-sacrifice in the line of duty. The honour bestowed upon Major Kalita stands as a fitting recognition of his heroism, professionalism and dedication to the nation.

His achievement has been widely hailed as a proud moment for the Indian Army and serves as an inspiring example of the courage and sacrifice displayed by soldiers in the service of the country.

The award reflects the highest traditions of the Armed Forces and underscores the unwavering commitment of Indian soldiers to protecting the nation’s security and sovereignty.
