Bandipora, May 9: Residents and public representatives in Bandipora have called for rationalisation of infrastructure between two government girls’ schools in the town, highlighting what they describe as a mismatch between enrolment and available facilities.
The issue centres around Government Girls Higher Secondary School Plan, which is currently accommodating more than 1100 students despite limited space and overcrowded classrooms, and Pm Shri Government Girls High School Kaloosa, which has comparatively larger infrastructure but an enrolment of only 243 students from nursery to Class 10.
Locals said the situation reflects an imbalance in the optimal utilisation of infrastructure and urged the district administration to undertake what they termed a rationalisation exercise.
They suggested shifting few academic streams from the GHSS Plan to GHS Kaloosa institution to ease congestion and improve learning conditions till the institution is formally upgraded Higher Secondary.
According to residents, the proposal would allow better use of existing infrastructure at Kaloosa while reducing pressure on overcrowded classrooms at Plan. They said the approach would also improve access to facilities for students in both institutions.
During a recent visit to the Kaloosa school, Nizamuddin Bhat supported the suggestion raised by residents. He said the institution is located on the banks of the Madhumati River and has infrastructure comparable to a college campus.
He said the school is equipped with laboratories, a library and a vast playground, along with adequate staff, and functions as a PM SHRI Model School with further augmentation work underway. He added that the institution already has sufficient facilities to support higher classes if upgraded.
Bhat observed that Bandipora town has only one girls’ higher secondary school, which is facing severe space constraints and has limited scope for physical expansion due to lack of land availability.
He demanded that Government Girls High School Kaloosa be upgraded to higher secondary level, stating that the proposal would not require major financial investment as infrastructure is already in place and only additional teaching staff would be needed.
Locals further suggested that students from the Quil zone, currently enrolled at GHSS Plan, could be shifted to Kaloosa to reduce overcrowding and ensure optimal utilisation of educational resources.
Residents and stakeholders have urged the education department and district administration to assess the feasibility of restructuring the two institutions to improve academic conditions, balance student distribution, and make fuller use of existing infrastructure in the district.
Residents said overcrowded classrooms at the Plan institution were affecting the learning environment and urged authorities to examine the feasibility of utilising the Kaloosa campus for higher secondary classes.
They called on the education department and district administration to conduct an assessment of infrastructure and enrolment patterns in order to ensure balanced distribution of educational resources and improved learning conditions for students in the district.
