Bandipora, May 12: Dr Zahoor Sofi on Tuesday sought immediate relief and compensation for farmers and orchardists affected by a hailstorm in the Arin area of Bandipora.

In a statement, Dr Zahoor expressed concern over the damage caused by heavy rains and hailstorm that struck the area on Monday evening, particularly affecting agricultural fields and apple orchards in Arin block from Gund qaiser to upper reaches of the Arin-Sumlar belt.

He urged the district administration to conduct an immediate assessment of losses suffered by farmers and orchardists and ensure timely compensation for the affected families.

According to the statement, Dr Zahoor said growers had suffered extensive damage to crops and orchards due to adverse weather conditions and were looking towards government support for relief and rehabilitation.

He stated that farmers and orchardists form a major part of the Union Territory’s economy and are frequently affected by weather-related losses. He called upon the government to extend support to affected cultivators and ensure that compensation reaches them without delay.

The National Conference leader also emphasised the need for comprehensive compensation measures for those whose crops and orchards were damaged in the hailstorm.

Officials have not yet issued an official estimate regarding the extent of losses caused by the weather conditions in the affected areas.
