Sitting MLA’s Brother Leads Protest Against National Conference

Bandipora, May 4: A protest erupted within the National Conference on Monday against the appointment of Dr Zahoor as District President, exposing internal divisions within the party.

The protest was led by NC leader Jalal Akbar Lone, brother of sitting MLA Sonawari Adv Hilal Akbar Lone, with workers openly rejecting the decision.

“We do not accept the newly appointed District President. The Block Presidents and local leadership, particularly from Sonawari, were not taken into confidence,” protesting workers said, terming the move “unacceptable” and alleging it was imposed without consultation.

The development highlights a growing rift within the district unit, with sections of the party expressing resentment over what they described as an arbitrary decision.

Meanwhile, another faction within the party defended the appointment. Party insiders, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Dr Zahoor is a long-time worker associated with the NC since 2002 and currently serves as an organiser for the Bandipora constituency.

They said he has also served as a delegate and that his elevation was approved by the party high command in consultation with senior leadership in north Kashmir.

Rejecting claims that he is an outsider, the insiders described the criticism as “misplaced,” asserting that he has a grassroots presence and respectable standing in the district.

Sources indicated that the protest has backing from some senior leaders, with speculation that at least two legislators may consider further steps if concerns remain unaddressed. [KNT]
