Charas Recovered During Naka Checking in Sumbal; Driver Arrested

Bandipora, April 28: Police in Sumbal apprehended a driver and recovered contraband during a routine naka checking operation on the Sumbal–Naidkhai road, officials said on Tuesday.

According to police, a Maruti Suzuki Eeco vehicle bearing registration number JK05H-4034, travelling from Sumbal towards Naidkhai, was intercepted near the CRPF training ground gate. During the search of the vehicle, a blue polythene bag was recovered from beneath the driver’s seat.

Officials said the bag contained charas sticks weighing approximately 300 grams.

The driver has been identified as Azad Ahmad Bhat, son of Ghulam Hassan Bhat, a resident of Gundboon, Naidkhai. He was taken into custody at the spot.

Police have registered a case under FIR No. 86/2026 under relevant provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act at Police Station Sumbal. Further investigation has been initiated to ascertain the source and intended destination of the recovered contraband.

Officials said the action is part of ongoing efforts to curb drug trafficking and substance abuse in the region.
