GDC Anantnag Inaugrates Two-Day Workshop on AI Buildathon

Anantnag, April 28: A two-day AI Buildathon was inaugurated at Government Degree College Anantnag on Tuesday.
The event is being organized by the Department of Computer Applications, GDC Anantnag, in collaboration with Dev Wizards, and sponsored by GitHub.
“This intensive Buildathon for undergraduate students across various higher education institutions of the region aims to foster a culture of innovation, open-source contribution, and applied learning by enabling students to transition from theoretical knowledge to practical, hands-on development,” a spokesperson of GDC Anantnag said.
“Designed as a structured, time-bound event, the Buildathon provides participants with an opportunity to conceptualize and develop AI-powered solutions, addressing real-world challenges. The initiative also emphasizes inclusivity by leveraging modern AI tools and platforms, ensuring that even students with limited prior programming experience can actively participate and contribute,” the spokesperson added.
The inaugural session was presided over by the Principal of GDC Anantnag, Prof. (Dr.) Mushtaq Ahmad Malik, who appreciated the efforts of the organizing team in bringing such a relevant and forward-looking initiative to the institution. In his address, Prof. Abdul Qayoom Sofi, HoD Computer Applications, highlighted the growing importance of Artificial Intelligence in shaping the future of technology and emphasized the need for students to engage in skill-based learning to remain competitive in the evolving digital landscape.
Dr. Assif Assad, Assistant Professor, Centre for Artificial Intelligence, Islamic University of Science and Technology, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.
In his address, he underscored the significance of Artificial Intelligence as a transformative technology and commended the institution for organizing a platform that promotes innovation and collaborative learning. He encouraged students to actively participate, experiment with ideas, and utilize such opportunities to build meaningful solutions and enhance their technical capabilities.
The programme also aims to provide students with professional exposure by encouraging project submissions on global platforms such as GitHub and Devpost, thereby aligning academic learning with international development practices and open-source ecosystems.
The inaugural session concluded with a formal vote of thanks delivered by Prof. Irshad Ahmad Lone of the Department of Computer Applications, who expressed gratitude to the Chief Guest, organizers, participants, and all stakeholders for their support in making the event successful.
Following the inauguration, participants commenced their Buildathon journey, engaging in ideation, team formation, and initial development phases.
The two-day event will culminate in project presentations, where teams will showcase their AI-based solutions before a panel of experts.
The Buildathon has witnessed enthusiastic participation from students across the valley, reflecting a strong interest in emerging technologies.
This initiative marks a significant step in Government Degree College Anantnag’s continued commitment to promoting innovation, enhancing technical skills, and preparing students to excel in the rapidly evolving world of Artificial Intelligence.
