RAJOURI, April 18: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Saturday said that drug addiction poses a serious societal challenge in Jammu and Kashmir, describing it as a threat that extends beyond visible conflict, while calling for intensified efforts to dismantle drug networks across the Union Territory.

Addressing a public rally in Rajouri under the ongoing drug-free campaign, the Lieutenant Governor said that addiction has affected many families over the years, resulting in loss and long-term social consequences. He termed the border district as sensitive and prone to cross-border drug smuggling, stressing the need for coordinated action to counter the issue.

The Lieutenant Governor said that a 100-day campaign against drug abuse, launched on April 11, aims to curb both supply and demand through enforcement, awareness, and rehabilitation measures. He noted that enforcement agencies have intensified operations in recent days, with over 45 FIRs registered, 63 alleged smugglers apprehended, and multiple seizures made in Jammu Division between April 11 and April 15.

He stated that the administration has put in place a structured approach covering detection, counselling, de-addiction, rehabilitation, and aftercare. Weekly monitoring of progress, including tracking of arrests and rehabilitation outcomes, has also been mandated, he added.

Highlighting prevention as a key component, the Lieutenant Governor said awareness initiatives are being expanded across schools, colleges, and community spaces to reach youth at an early stage. He called for collective participation from society, including non-governmental organisations and community groups, to strengthen the campaign.

He also directed law enforcement agencies to ensure strict action against those involved in drug trafficking, stating that exemplary punishment is necessary to deter such activities. He added that a standard operating procedure has been formulated to streamline enforcement and judicial processes.

During the event, the Lieutenant Governor administered an anti-drug pledge and participated in a padyatra organised as part of the campaign. He also launched local sports initiatives, including the Rajouri Premier League and Rajouri Football Club, aimed at promoting youth engagement.

Officials said the campaign combines enforcement measures with outreach and rehabilitation efforts, with the objective of reducing drug abuse and strengthening community resilience across the region.
