SRINAGAR, April 18: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Saturday reviewed the progress of the ongoing Extension Block at Government Lalla Ded Hospital and directed officials to ensure its timely completion while maintaining quality standards.

During the inspection, the Chief Minister assessed construction progress, execution strategy and infrastructure development of the project, which is being developed as a dedicated Infertility and Gynaecological Oncology Centre aimed at strengthening specialised maternal and neonatal healthcare services in Jammu and Kashmir.

Officials informed that the project is being executed by the Public Works Department under the World Bank-funded Jhelum Tawi Flood Recovery Project at an estimated cost of ₹118.22 crore. The facility is planned as a G+5+attic structure with a built-up area of approximately 11,640 square metres and will include 117 specialised beds, comprising 65 for adults and 52 for infants.

The Chief Minister emphasised adherence to timelines and called for coordinated efforts among departments to ensure smooth execution. He also stressed the need for uninterrupted fund flow and timely approvals to facilitate early operationalisation of the facility.

According to officials, the centre will include modular operation theatres, intensive care units (ICU), high dependency units (HDU), neonatal intensive care units (NICU), labour, delivery and recovery (LDR) suites, in vitro fertilisation (IVF) laboratories and advanced fetal intervention facilities.

The project incorporates base isolation technology using friction pendulum isolators to enhance seismic resilience, considering the region’s placement in Zone-V. Authorities said the design and engineering aspects have been vetted by technical institutions to ensure structural safety.

Officials further briefed that foundation works and the ground floor structure have been completed, while installation of base isolators is at an advanced stage. Pre-engineered building works are ongoing, and procurement of medical equipment along with mechanical and electrical systems has been initiated.

The Chief Minister said the facility will significantly enhance healthcare infrastructure in the region by providing advanced and accessible care for women and newborns.

He was accompanied by Advisor Nasir Aslam Wani, Principal and Dean Government Medical College Srinagar Dr. Iffat Hassan, and other senior officials from the health and engineering departments.
