LG Sinha Dedicates Tawi Riverfront Phase-I to Public, Launches Urban Initiatives

Jammu, April 14: Manoj Sinha on Tuesday dedicated the Rs 156-crore Phase-I of the Tawi Riverfront Project to the public on the occasion of Baisakhi, while launching a series of urban development initiatives during Tawi Mahotsav 2026.

The riverfront project, developed by Jammu Smart City Limited, includes promenades on the left bank, right bank, and central island, forming four continuous stretches for walking, jogging, and cycling. A dedicated ghat for Tawi Aarti has also been constructed as part of the project.

Addressing the gathering, the Lieutenant Governor said the initiative aims to create inclusive and accessible public spaces while integrating urban development with environmental and cultural considerations. He added that the project reflects a blend of tradition and modernity.

On the occasion, Sinha laid the foundation stone for a four-lane connecting road and bridge linking the right bank to ease congestion and directly connect Bhagwati Nagar rotary with Jewel Chowk. He also launched the development of green spaces along a one-kilometre stretch of the top promenade on the left bank, aimed at enhancing the riverfront as a public and recreational space.

The Lieutenant Governor said that under the Urban Challenge Fund, two additional initiatives are being undertaken, including real estate monetisation of Phase-I and extension of the riverfront from Bikram Chowk Bridge to Har Ki Paudi. He noted that these measures are expected to support the transformation of the riverfront into a tourism and economic hub.

Highlighting the cultural significance of the city, Sinha said Jammu’s identity is closely linked to its river-based heritage and long-standing traditions. He emphasised the importance of preserving and passing on cultural values to future generations.

During the event, the Lieutenant Governor joined citizens for the Tawi Aarti, administered an anti-drug pledge, and felicitated winners of a traditional dangal competition.

The programme was attended by Members of Parliament, legislators, senior civil and police officials, religious leaders, and citizens from various sections of society.
