Jammu, April 14: Manoj Sinha on Tuesday said that serving the needy is the highest duty, while addressing a ceremony marking the upgradation of ‘Apna Bhojanalaya’ at Government Medical College Jammu.

The community kitchen, operated by Sewa Bharati with support from Jammu and Kashmir Bank and other donors, provides meals to patients and attendants. Speaking at the event, the Lieutenant Governor emphasised the role of compassion and selfless service in strengthening communities. He said feeding those in need upholds dignity and contributes to social cohesion.

Sinha lauded the efforts of volunteers and donors associated with the initiative and said such efforts help reinforce community support systems. He also called on citizens to contribute towards social welfare and participate in efforts to address challenges such as drug abuse.

Later, on the occasion of Baisakhi, the Lieutenant Governor dedicated the Rs 156-crore Phase-I of the Tawi Riverfront Project to the public and inaugurated the three-day Tawi Mahotsav 2026.

Addressing a gathering at the event, he said the riverfront project aims to combine urban development with cultural and environmental considerations. Phase-I includes promenades along the left and right banks of the Tawi River and a central island, creating continuous stretches for walking, jogging and cycling. A dedicated ghat for Tawi Aarti has also been constructed.

He announced that a four-lane road and bridge connecting the right bank will be developed to improve traffic flow and connectivity between Bhagwati Nagar and Jewel Chowk. Plans for developing green spaces along the promenade were also outlined.

Officials said additional initiatives under the Urban Challenge Fund include extending the riverfront from Bikram Chowk Bridge to Har Ki Paudi and exploring real estate monetisation to support further development.

Sinha said the project is intended to create accessible public spaces and enhance tourism and economic activity in the region. He also participated in the Tawi Aarti and administered an anti-drug pledge during the event.
